I first learned about National Novel Writing month in 2006. Since then, I’ve had four chances to participate, but the timing hasn’t been particularly, ah, ideal.
In summary:
1 November 2006 – 30,000 words into writing Walker in the Gyre
1 November 2007 – ~20,000 words into writing Raise My Head and Watch the Moon
1 November 2008 – 60,000 words into writing Shadows of the Khan
1 November 2009 – Two thirds of the way through draft 8 of Three Parts Dead (full length: 102,000 words)
1 November 2010 – 110,000 words into writing Two Serpents Rise (prequel to 3pd), 80,0o0 words into writing Blood & Tumult (novel for baegtobar.com)
Turns out that having a regular writing schedule more or less disqualifies me from NaNoWriMo. Still, someday maybe the timing will line up. Best of luck to everyone else in their work!
